I’ve got to admit, until recently, I had been finding these winter mornings, with the suns position so low in the sky irritating. Trying to drive with the sun shining right in your eyes is not fun and pulling the sun visors down, did nothing, the sun still seemed to shine in from all angles.
With it being winter, the Northern Hemisphere leans away from the sun, and the sun hits us at an angle, hence why the sun shines right into our eyes this time of year! Being ever the optimist, I began thinking and wondering how I could view this phenomenon from a different viewpoint.
One morning as I was driving across the countryside and just starting to feel the annoyance of being blinded by the sun, I noticed lots of beautiful sun rays starting from the sun shining through the clouds down to the ground. It looked remarkable especially with the views of the countryside.
It reminded me of the sentence in what we know as ‘the Lord’s prayer’ which says ‘Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’. Its almost as if at that moment, those sun rays reminded me of that connection between heaven and earth. That prayer has got to be one of the most prayed prayers and all this time, we have been asking for our earth to be invaded by the glory of God’s kingdom that is in heaven. Praying for God’s glory to reign on this earth. Another way to look at this is God’s glory as a manifestation of God’s presence.
In the bible, Moses was absolutely desperate to see God’s glory. The way the bible records the conversations between Moses and God is similar to two mates chatting. The only difference is that Moses couldn’t see God. Because God is full of glory and brighter than the sun, God had to talk to Moses through a pillar of cloud which kept the brightness of His glory contained. Moses would literally beg God, ‘Please let me see your glory’ (Exodus 33:18). He was desperate to see God. God’s response was that ‘No one can see me and live.’ (Exodus 33:20).
Thinking of this in the context of the brightness of the sun shining in my eyes on a winter morning has really changed my perspective of things. I haven’t since changing my mindset been annoyed by the sun in my eyes, instead, I’ve smiled and embraced it at the same time as praying for God’s glory to be seen on this earth.
I’m sure your perception of the sun in your eyes while you are trying to drive wont be like mine but none the less, I am sure you would agree, there is so much bad that we hear each day from the news, from people we know and things we experience. To be praying for God’s presence to be manifested in our homes, our town, our workplaces and on this earth can only invite more of His brightness and goodness to shine on us.
Let’s choose to shine bright and be carriers of His glory in our homes, our town, our workplaces and on this earth.
